“I love The Citadel,” injects Mace. “It’s the school I always wanted to attend. But there will always be gender-related issues at the college, with people who don’t think women should be at The Citadel. I know what it’s like to be in a minority; I see things much differently as a result of my experience at the school.” Suddenly, her voice drops to a cautionary whisper. “When the results of the cadet survey on sexual harassment were released last year, this represented an important issue about which I spoke to the media,” adds Mace. “After the interviews, my husband and I were harassed with obscene phone calls for a week, and I was stalked. So now, I don’t publicly list my address or phone number.”

Mace recalled in her 2001 book "In the Company of Men" how those first years weren't easy…"I think in some ways these next 10 years will be harder if not just as hard," said Mace, who works for a marketing firm in Atlanta.

Women Gain Ground at Citadel
"It took ... about 4 to 6 years to really get it ingrained into the cadets that women at the Citadel are business as usual," said Citadel Commandant of Cadets Brig. Gen. James Emory Mace, who was brought in to oversee the transition. In 1999, Mace's own daughter became the first female cadet to graduate from the Citadel. "I'd send my daughter here," said Nancy Mace (search), who wrote about the experiences in her book, "In the Company of Men."
